Reversing Desertification through Esparto Grass Weaving

Design for Climate
Sustainable Innovation

The World Design Organization (WDO) is a global body that promotes innovation and sustainability through industrial design. In collaboration with its Young Designers Circle, WDO launched Heritage in Motion, a three-week virtual design sprint held from 30 September to 21 October 2024. Aimed at post-secondary design students, the sprint encouraged interdisciplinary, multicultural teamwork to explore design's role in shaping the future.

Teams worked with mentors to identify problems, research gaps, and propose innovative solutions across seven sub-themes. Our project responded to the Technological Craftsmanship theme—merging traditional esparto grass weaving with sustainable design to address desertification in Spain.
